Cancer Truth Note: #121

Knowing what is “normal” can help you to make decisions faster, even when the “normal” does not seem normal at all.

Last week I had surgery. Over the past few years I have had several. I am usually a good waker upper. I am generally fully awake and with it, I remember everything from the time I wake up. This time I was given something different before the procedure and it really knocked me out. I ended up sleeping for a lot of the day in recovery. Not a big deal, just unexpected and not my normal.

There was a hurdle I needed to clear before I could be released. The challenge was no one told me that it is normal NOT to clear the hurdle. As the day went on and I was more with it, I started getting nervous about the fact that I was not clearing the hurdle. It wasn’t until 5:30pm that the nurse, who was fantastic, said “This is normal. It happens about half the time.”

Really? Half the time. If I had known that I might have chosen door number two hours earlier and gone home. It also would have saved me some worry.

Have you been surprised by what is “normal”?
