Cancer Truth Note: #106

Morning person or night owl? Navigating cancer or illness may shine a light on your natural preferences.

I have always been a night owl. I come by it pretty honestly. My grandmother worked the 4pm to midnight audit shift in a bank for nearly 30 years. When I was in college she would leave messages on my answering machine like I’ll be up until at least 1am if you want to call me back. People would hear the messages and say your grandmother is up until 1am? Seriously?

I considered becoming a school teacher, but I couldn’t face the early start times. My mom once said to me, “You are a morning person. You get up early every day to go to work.” My response, “Yes, they pay me money to turn up and I am expected at a certain time. It is not really my choice.”

For a long time following my treatment mornings were NOT my friend. I actually had to leave a networking group because they met too early in the morning and I could not get up early enough to do my pet chores, shower, and get there without turning up in a cold sweat because my body was just not cooperating.

It took a couple of years for that to subside. Maybe the lady from cancer truth note #103 was on to something after all. When I get run down or have a cold I struggle in the mornings. Yet my evenings are usually ok even if I am not 100%.

I think there may be something to this morning person, night owl thing after all.
