Cancer Truth Note: #128

Doctors do their best to navigate everyone’s preferences. Tell them how much information you want to make their job a little easier.

Everyone is different. People come in all shapes and sizes and everyone has different preferences about how they want to receive information.

There are people who want all the information. No amount is too much.

There are people who want the bare minimum to make the next step.

There are people who just want to be told what to do, nothing more.

No way is better than the other. It comes down to your preferences. However, for doctors they are walking a tightrope about how much information they give you. It is ok to tell them exactly where you are and what you want to know.

I like all the facts. Tell me everything. I had a friend that when she was diagnosed metastatic she specifically told the doctors she would do whatever treatment they told her to do, she did not want to know the prognosis. It would be what it would be.

Totally different ends of the spectrum are both ok. The key here is to advocate for how you want to receive information. If it is overwhelming it is also ok to say I reached my limit for today. Let me process.

Which type of information gatherer are you? Have you advocated for your preferences?
