Cancer Truth Note: #146

Sometimes a setback may prompt us to temporarily vacate our normal life. This may be necessary for healing or recovery, or it may be a sign of depression.

Back in March I had surgery where I was scheduled to be out of the office for five days and restricted for eight weeks. Suffice it to say recovery has been much longer and it has forced me to stop all the normal things I do that lift my spirits.

I am normally fairly productive. However, I started to notice that I was avoiding activities that I could be doing while I was restricted from exercising and participating in my normal daily routine. I became aware of this but still didn’t take action. At that point I had to consider that maybe I was depressed.

For me I think this may be totally normal given the circumstances. It is definitely ok to take a break. I have a requirement to have at least one day a week with no requirements. The challenge is not staying in that place for an extended period once we can recognize it for what it is.

I am curious, what do you do to step back into the activities you can when you find that you are on a mental vacation?
