Cancer Truth Note: #149

Fixating on past mistakes may be an effort to find reasons for a cancer diagnosis or it may be a sign of depression.

Often when receiving a cancer diagnosis there is a search for why. This might show up as punishing yourself for past choices that may in reality have nothing to do with the current situation.

If you find you are more in the past than in the present, talking to a professional might help to process the past feelings.

A note about the difference between coaching and therapy. Therapy looks at the past and can help process that or see how it is impacting your present. Coaching is intended to help you navigate the present. For instance if you want to implement an exercise program and you are struggling a coach can help you work through that. If you are trying to implement a new diet, perhaps at your doctor’s urging, and disordered eating is uncovered as a barrier, a coach should refer you to a therapist who can support you in regard to the disordered eating.

Everyone can benefit from therapy at one point or another. Taking care of mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health.

How can you benefit your mental health today?
