Cancer Truth Note: #157
No one wants chronic pain or other treatment side effects to hold them back from activities they love. It is possible to regain confidence and control over these challenges we never expected.
The brain is such a tricky thing. That protector says you have pain, do not do anything that might cause more pain. Totally makes sense. This is where we may have to override that protector.
Have you ever experienced this?
You have a shoulder injury. Then it heals. Every time you go to do something with the shoulder you feel a twinge. The twinge causes you to stop in your tracks. Twinges are UNSAFE.
Or are they?
I have seen this a lot in the studio post pandemic. A LOT! Often it goes like this…
My client is doing an exercise and they experience the twinge. I see it on their face or in the way they wince, or simply stop doing the exercise mid movement.
I ask what was that?
Almost always the initial response is there was pain.
So we dig deeper. By the fifth description we get to the source of the twinge. It is often fear of new or recurring pain, not actual pain itself. The point here is it holds us back. The brain says don’t do it.
When we recognize what is happening and really look at it, we can push the edges and teach the brain a new response.
What have you experienced this week that needs a closer look or a reframe? Did looking closer boost your confidence? Drop it in the comments
I have been working with some simple tools both personally and the studio that are amazing for focusing the brain, improving mobility, and positively impacting neuropathy. I am sharing some short videos of these in my facebook group Surviving is Just the Beginning this week. So come on over and join if you are not already there or DM me for more information.
