Cancer Truth Note: #360

Regaining and/or maintaining your physical health in cancer survivorship is a challenge that needs a better solution.

There are so many components to this. Cancer treatment can put weight on your body, it can take weight off your body. If you are exhausted or have a condition that prevents you from exercising or doing a base amount of movement you may lose muscle mass. Then treatment ends and it takes much longer than you were prepared for to get your energy back.

Getting started or starting again is overwhelming and maybe even a little scary. I definitely get it. I have been there.

Doctors often say, “You need to exercise more.” Yet they don’t have a guideline for that.

One of the best things about cardiac care is that cardiac rehab forces you to exercise. You are with a medical professional who can help you and when you are released back into the wild it is less scary, because you have been doing activities in a controlled environment that you can confidently take with you.

Exercise has been found to reduce our risk of cancer recurrence by 30% or more. So we need to do a better job helping cancer survivors to get moving.

Do you have an exercise routine that you love? Is it social, solitary, helping your mental well being as well as your physical well being? Drop your favorite exercise activities in the comments.
