Cancer Truth Note: #67

Mild lymphedema is not visible. By the time it is visible, it may no longer be reversible. Breast Cancer Survivors need to be screened!

For too long breast cancer survivors have not been sent for a breast cancer related lymphedema (BCRL) screening until there are visible or palpable (something they can feel) signs of fluid building up. This may be too late!

The fact is that the first 10% increase in fluid buildup in the arm is often invisible and by the time the fluid build up becomes visible it may be impossible to reduce the fluid to subclinical or mild lymphedema levels. This means lifelong compression management and potentially skin infections, mobility challenges, difficulty doing daily tasks and pain.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms: pain, heaviness, numbness, tingling pins and needles, loss of strength, slow healing cuts or scratches, or difficulty doing daily tasks and you have not been assessed recently it is time to get screened!

Not sure where to start. I can help, drop me a comment or a DM.
