Cancer Truth Note: #87

by | Feb 27, 2023 | Cancer Truth Note

People you thought would show up to support you disappear and people you didn’t know cared at all show up in big ways.

This is one of those tough truths we are likely to deal with in silence. I was doing a podcast interview and during the break when we were off air the lady I was interviewing said, a close family member had ghosted her after her diagnosis. It had been ten years since her initial treatment.

When I said, “You are not alone, we all experience at least one ghosting.” She was shocked and she really had not talked about it. This is another situation where it is not about us and what we are going through. It is about their ability to deal with what we are going through in a way where they can actually show up rather than disappear.  It is often shocking, and it definitely hurts when people disappear. The people who unexpectedly show up to support us is often equally surprising.

Unfortunately, not everyone can show up. That is not our failing, it is their issue. Lean into the people who lean in to you and know the people who cannot be there are doing you a favor by not burdening you with their challenges.

Have you been ghosted or found a friendship blossomed in unexpected positive ways because of your diagnosis?
