Cancer Truth Note: #161

When we have an understanding tribe, navigating challenges may be easier.

I have been a volunteer for Casting for Recovery for a few years now. In episode 44 of Unspoken Cancer Truths (https://fitnessdesignsolutions.com/ep-44-fly-fishing-for-survivorship-support-with-wendy-gawlik-fitness-in-survivorship-part-2-of-5/) Wendy Gawlik and I talked about the power of a community who has been in the neighborhood of where you have been. When I attended my CFR fly fishing retreat as a participant in October of 2021 I discovered it was truly the retreat I did not know my soul needed. I talk more about it in episode 78 (https://fitnessdesignsolutions.com/retreat/).

This wasn’t a support group. This was an activities based gathering. While we were all breast cancer survivors we weren’t there to talk about being breast cancer survivors we were there to learn how to fly fish. In between the activities there were opportunities to get to know our fellow retreaters and the conversations about ongoing challenges and possible solutions evolved organically.

That is the beauty of being in a community and forming a tribe. It isn’t about focusing on the challenges but seeking solutions or tools and we can get further together.

Have you found your tribe? What do you love about them? Or what are you looking for in one?
